Kassandra is the western peninsula of Halkidiki, better known as the “first finger” or “first leg” as Greeks call it. The peninsula was named after Kassandros, the ancient Macedonian king. What attracts foreign and domestic tourists are long sandy beaches, crystal clear sea and pine wood. Being closest to Thessaloniki, Kassandra is the most developed tourist region, fraught with hotel resorts and holiday apartments that have given boost to local economy. The peninsula is replete with hotels of all categories, traditional Greek taverns, disco clubs, bars and many other night life spots.
Kalithea, Polichrono, Hanioti and Pefkochori are holiday places that sit on the eastern side of Kassandra, offering the most translucent water of Thoroneos bay to swim, as well as plenty other attractions for the most choosy tourists.
Sani, Fourka and Siviri are located on the western side. Great number of villages on Kassandra peninsula is prefixed with Nea which is Greek for new, as these villages were founded by refugees in the 20s of the last century. Roads are good, well-maintained and in sufficient number, so you can easily reach any destination that you want.
Coastline is blessed with good beaches, and the shallow sea makes it a favourite destination for families with children. Over ten fantastic beaches are awarded a blue flag, given only to beaches that achieve excellence in water quality.
You should definitely travel through Kassandra and whole Halkidiki peninsula to get the real and authentic flavour of Greece:
1. Akritas, with the biggest wine cellar in Northern Greece and over 600 types of wines from entire Greece is situated few kilometers from Pefkohori. Prices per wine bottle range from 3 to over 200 euros (depending on the type and year).
2. Loutra has a single small beach with a crystal-clear tranquil sea, a churh hidden in olive groves and a café where you can experience perfect peace.
3. When you reach Loutra, turn to Agios Paraskevi village and you will almost feel like time has stopped in the 40s or 50s of the last century. Streets are so narrow that your car can easily get stuck. While sitting in a local tavern you will enjoy the sights from many Greek postcards – small houses painted white and blue with red flower-filled window boxes.
4. Beside all this, we should mention that Kassandra is just one hour of easy drive away from Thessaloniki. In order to feel Thessaloniki you should mount the fortress and move away from the sea, go to the hills to visit open amphitheatres and parks.
These are just few suggestions for sightseeing and a good reason for you to spend your summer vacation on Kassandra…
