In addition to the traditional ‘gyros’ and ‘musaka’, the Greeks are known for their great selection and delicious cakes. If you spend your holidays in Greece, we suggest you to certainly try traditional Greek desserts. You can buy them in larger supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, on the beach, as well as in pastry shops. Most cakes are a mixture of Turkish cakes and treats, and the Greek way of preparation. The Greeks will be insulted if you tell them that the baklava or tulumba is a Turkish cake. The same goes for coffee, so it’s best to order ‘greek’ coffee.
Still, there are unique Greek sweets, of course. The most famous Greek desserts you must try are: Greek alva, portokalopita (orange cake), kokaki, kadaif in Greek way, tulumba, baklava, lokumades. An interesting and varied selection of local cakes can be found at local markets, which are usually organized once a week, depending on the city. In the meantime, you can find some recipes on the internet and at least for a moment feel like in Greece.
Καλή όρεξη (bon apettite)!
