Ouranoupoli is the last town before Mount Athos, about 120 km from Thessaloniki, and the port from which boats leave for the monasteries and for cruises along the Athos coast. The symbol of the town is the 14th-century Byzantine Prosforio tower beside the harbour. The promenade is full of tavernas and cafés, and besides the town beach there are small coves nearby and trips to the Drenia islets. The town is quiet, with no nightlife, and dolphins are often seen here.
