What the drive from Belgrade to Halkidiki looks like

The drive to Halkidiki is an adventure in itself: about 750 km, three countries, two border crossings — and turquoise sea waiting at the end. The whole route follows the E-75 motorway south through Niš, Skopje and Thessaloniki, simple and straightforward.

Pure driving time is about eight hours, but with the borders and breaks count on 10–12. So half the trick is knowing where to stop — for coffee, fuel, lunch or the night. You don’t have to do it all in one day: if you travel with children or like to take it easy, spend a night on the way.

Leg 1 Serbia

Serbia: short breaks to the border

From Belgrade to Preševo it’s about 390 km of motorway, a little under four hours. Don’t linger here — coffee, fuel, a quick stretch and on you go.

Belgrade → Preševo · 387 km · ~4 h

Niš

First break

About two hours from Belgrade, ideal for the first break. The fortress is a few minutes off the motorway — perfect for stretching your legs.

Leskovac

Grill stop

Half an hour past Niš. Serbia’s grill capital — if you’re hungry, a Leskovac pljeskavica is a good reason to leave the motorway.

Preševo

Before the border

The last stop before the Preševo–Tabanovce crossing. Take a breather and have your documents ready — the Macedonian leg starts after the border.

Keep it short: coffee, fuel, a break

Leg 2 North Macedonia

Where to stop in North Macedonia?

The most beautiful part of the drive: about 180 km of motorway from Tabanovce to Bogorodica, through Skopje and the Vardar gorge. If you’d rather not do it all in one day, this is the best place to spend the night.

Tabanovce → Bogorodica · 180 km · ~2 h

Skopje

Ideal for the night

Halfway down and ideal for the night, especially with children. The Old Bazaar, the Stone Bridge and the Alexander the Great statue are a few minutes’ walk apart, and there are restaurants for dinner at every turn.

Veles and Demir Kapija

The prettiest stretch

Here the motorway follows the Vardar through its gorge — nature, cliffs and the river right beside the road. A great place for a break without a big detour.

Gevgelija

Last stop before the border

The town right by the Bogorodica–Evzoni crossing. Fill the tank before Greece — or sleep here and cross early in the morning, when the queues are shortest.

Leg 3 Greece

Where to stop before Halkidiki?

After the Evzoni border it’s about 75 km to Thessaloniki, and from there an hour or an hour and a half to the first “finger”. Thessaloniki is the key point of the route.

Evzoni → Thessaloniki → Halkidiki · 165–205 km · 2–2.5 h

Thessaloniki

Key point of the route

Greece’s second city, just an hour before Halkidiki and ideal for the night. Walk the waterfront to the White Tower and have dinner in the centre — if you’ve never been, it’s worth at least a coffee or lunch.

Kilkis

A quieter alternative

A smaller town north of Thessaloniki, about twenty minutes off the motorway. A good choice for a quiet break or a night away from city traffic.

Polygyros

The heart of Halkidiki

The capital of Halkidiki, with old stone houses and tavernas. A short detour if you’re heading for Sithonia or Athos.

Nea Moudania

Last stop before the “fingers”

The town at the gateway to Kassandra, with a waterfront, supermarkets and fuel stations. The last proper break before the road forks to Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos.

Tips for the drive to Halkidiki

The borders can hold you up, while motorway covers most of the route — here’s how to keep the drive stress-free.

When to leave

At night or early in the morning, when the borders are quietest. Leave Belgrade around 11 pm and you cross at Evzoni at dawn and reach the sea by late morning.

Where the queues are

At the borders, on summer Fridays and Saturdays. Delays are longest during the day — then allow two or three hours of waiting.

How long it takes

About 750 km and eight hours of pure driving — realistically 10–12 hours with breaks and borders. Motorway makes up most of the route, from Belgrade to Thessaloniki.

Where to fill up

Fuel is usually cheapest in North Macedonia and dearest in Greece. Fill the tank before the border at Gevgelija.

Border crossings

Preševo — Tabanovce

Open 24 hours. Queues are longest on summer Fridays and Saturdays — we recommend setting off in the early morning hours.

Bogorodica — Evzoni

Open 24 hours and busiest on summer Fridays and Saturdays — the quickest time to cross is around 4 am. Greece has introduced the EES passport-control system on its side, which can slow things down.

Travelling with children

  • Leave at night or early in the morning — the children sleep and the border is quiet.
  • Stop every 2–2.5 hours.
  • Bring snacks and water from home — they cost more at motorway stops.
  • Load a tablet with films for the Macedonian stretch.
  • If it’s too far for one day, spend the night in Skopje or Thessaloniki.
